Our Weekend Getaway

August 23, 2010

This past weekend, my husband and I happened to be off together, which just doesn’t happen. I always work at the hospital on the weekend that he is off so we have someone to keep the kids. But now that we’ve moved, my wonderful aunt Cheryl (who is like a grandmother to the kids) keeps them for us when we need her. God bless her! So Jade and I couldn’t decide on what we wanted to do. We thought about doing something for just the two of us, but then decided we would rather do something with the kids, since we don’t get to do anything big with them. (I know, I know. Jade and I don’t get a lot of couple time either–but that’ll come soon. :) ) Anyway, we decided to make a quick trip to the beach! We packed a few things, made a quick reservation for a hotel room, got in the car, and drove to Tybee Island. It took us 4 hours but the kids behaved wonderfully. When we got there, the kids reminded me how different they are from one another. Ashlyn laid eyes on the water for the first time and said, “Woooow! This is so exciting!” And Brent was ecstatic over the SAND. (huh?) So we spent Saturday afternoon, with Brent playing in the sand–he didn’t like the strong current of the waves and how it made him dizzy when the tide would move the waves in and out. And Ashlyn–well, we couldn’t keep her out of the water! She loooved how she could wade in, wait for a wave to build up, and jump into it and let it carry and roll her back to the shore. It was so fun, hearing her giggle and screech. I tell you, I love these kids.

They were flying their kites their aunt Cheryl bought for them. It was perfectly windy and made kite flying a breeze. It was even effortless for my little Brent–who’s just shy of 3 years old. :)

Then we went into Savannah for a bit so we could take a carriage ride for Ashlyn. While waiting, we went into Savannah Candy Kitchen and oh my gosh! Now we know what a kid looks like in a candystore! Ha!

It was SOOOOO hot. We made sure we had plenty of water. Poor Brent was drench in sweat. But he never complained.

On our way home, we stopped at Wormsloe Plantation so I could snap a few pictures of the kids on the oak avenue. This place is so pretty! Definitely going to order a couple of canvases of these. (Sorry Jade! lol)

Sweaty and red-faced, we were ready to head home. Plus Brent had a poopie diaper in the pic below, that we HAD to tend to! Ew!

Ashlyn started her first day of kindergarten a few weeks ago and she’s loving every day. Her first day went great…for her anyway. From the time I walked her to her classroom, I wanted to stay there with her and hold her hand until it was time to come home. I walked her to her little seat at her tiny table, with her name laminated and taped to her tabletop as her placeholder. She quickly sat down and looked around, trying to take it all in. She wasn’t scared at all. She was thrilled. She looked at me as if to say, “Okay….you can go now!” I felt a lump in my throat and tried to swallow it back down. My little girl is growing up!  So little yet so big all at the same time! As I left the classroom, I glanced once more at her. She wasn’t even looking at me. She was talking to her classmate next to her. She was blending right in. I was sad to leave her, but then a part of me felt a huge wave of relief knowing she was going to love kindergarten. And she’s going to be just fine. :)

I’m really enjoying living where are. It’s quite rural compared to where we used to live. But I love how quiet it is and how sweet and friendly our neighbors are. And I love walking around the property. Apple trees and blueberry bushes have drawn some pretty butterflies. I had to take a few pictures around my front yard.

So my sweet sister-in-law got married the other weekend and I got to sit back, enjoy the gathering of my family, and NOT be the photographer. And I really enjoyed being there. To be able to just be there and not worry about this shot or that. I snapped a few here and there, mostly of the little details I feel like the hired photographer missed out on and then some snapped some recents of my sweet kids and nieces and GREAT niece (still trying to get used to the idea that I’m a great aunt, ha!) Anyway, it was a lot of fun. Congratulations, Suzanne & Jay! :)

Yeah, their starting to become more cooperative when it comes to pictures. It’s a work in progress. But hey–I’m just thankful they’re both looking in the same direction!

I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the thought that I have an almost 5 year old who will be starting kindergarten this fall! She seems so grown. :( I can still close my eyes and, for a minute, feel the sweet, soft, warm weight of her little body when the nurse handed her to me for the very first time. (*wiping tears*)

Chloe. {my newest baby}

December 2, 2009

Meet Chloe, our newest addition to the family. She’s 9 nine weeks old and we’ve had her about 2 weeks. I feel terrible that I haven’t been able to take pictures of her before now. I went ahead snapped a few while setting up for a session. She’s little ham already. I sat her down and it was as if she was posing on purpose. Ashlyn just adores her. Well, we all do–even though Jade won’t ever admit it. I think she’s growing on him. :)

I finally had the chance to meet my great niece, Kayleigh Anne. What a precious little bundle of squishiness. I enjoyed getting to snuggle with her. :)

She’s a Rider.

September 14, 2009

Today was Ashlyn’s first day of riding lessons at Foxwood Farm Training Center in Jefferson, Georgia. And oh my goodness. To see the joy light up her little face, it melts my heart to pieces. I just love seeing her so happy. She was definitely in her element. Although she’s ridden horses on numerous occasions with her big cousin Erica, today was the first time she took the reigns, sat in a saddle just her size, feet secured in stirrups at the perfect height. And on top of the perfectly sized pony. Her pony’s name is Marilyn and Ashlyn just adores her. Ms. Shirley, her riding instructor, was so good with her. Ashlyn rode all over that farm. With the reigns in her hands, she made that sweet little pony go everywhere. She was so cute riding her!

And the farm itself is just so beautiful. So cozy and “broken in.” I just love it there. And so does my Ash. So, we will definitely be back. Every single week.

I had the opportunity to photograph my beautiful niece, Katie. I had fun with her, deciding on what outfit would go with which backdrop. Talking about her baby shower from the day before. And reminiscing about those things they don’t tell you about pregnancy (the unwanted things). Heck, it all still made me miss being pregnant. I Looooved being pregnant. It’s the one time I felt beautiful and that it was actually okay to have a round belly. And speaking of round bellies–she definitely got one. And it’s as cute as can be.

Can’t wait to meet this baby girl. I can totally see her being showered with hugs and kisses!

Kids! {Summer.Ashlyn.Brent.}

September 10, 2009

My friend Nikki and I got together this evening in an attempt to photograph each other’s kids. We figured that it would be easier if I photographed her daughter, Summer, and she photographed my kids, Ash & Brent. Well. Let’s just say we still had to work hard to get pictures. Summer was a lot easier for me than Brent. Ashlyn’s not so bad anymore. She actually likes to have her pictures taken and immediately chimp the camera (look on the screen at the picture she just took). But here’s some of what I managed to get.

And go see what Nikki managed to get of my kiddos. Check them out: http://www.nikkibanikphotography.com

Trekking through the little farmplace. The kids all hopping & skipping & running everywhere.

Out take: So many of these. Brent is such a little firecracker. By the end of the evening, I was yelling. He becomes immune to directions. He gets to where he doesn’t care about them anymore!
IMG_3314webIMG_3309webIMG_3307webI love her skinned knees in this one.IMG_3301webIMG_3287webIMG_3283webIMG_3276webIMG_3273bwwebLike I said–hopping & skipping & running. Happy to be free.IMG_3253webIMG_3252webIMG_3248web

I have been searching for this chair on craigslist, antique stores, yard sales and flea markets for what seems like an eternity! I have had visions of a gold velvet chair in my head with the irresistible need to take pictures of kids sitting or climbing on it. There’s just something about it. The color, the texture, the way it pops out in the green of the grass. And nothing could go better with it than my sweet, challenging-to-take-pictures-of children. They are definitely a photographer’s children. Desensitized to the bribes and attempted distractions and coercing. They make me work for my photographs. But I do love them so.

young love.

August 9, 2009

Visiting some family in Hartwell today and snapped a few pics with my 15 year old cousin Erica with her boyfriend Joshy-poo. They’re so into each other, it’s sickening. (Sorry guys.) Ah, the days of young love.
